Building a winner’s attitude
“A positive mindset rises above the challenge to create something different”
I was on the radio yesterday listening in, and contributing to an important discussion about Township businesses, which inevitably lead to a conversation about the alarming levels of crime and insecurity in our townships.
Under such dire circumstances it is especially important for entrepreneurs to actively cultivate a winners mindset that gives them the energy and self-belief to succeed.
Hundreds of successful Fetola entrepreneurs are located in the township – Daveyton, Ivory Park, Khayelitsha, Thoyando Ennerdale…the list is long and represents many different business models from uniform production to water supplies, and branding & marketing to waste management.
Success stories like Lethabo Mokwena of Walk Fresh whose sneaker cleaning business is now also in Sandton and Century City, Mawande Jara of Mkhuzangwe Waste Solutions who has just launched an innovative waste solution in Khayelitsha and emerging young entrepreneur Prudence Mhlambi of Spoils for the Hunays from Katlhehong who is building a cafe and eatery are just some of the inspiring entrepreneurs showing the way!
A winner’s mindset is the spark that allows people to rise from hardship to become successful, it’s the juice that turns an idea into reality. Cultivating a winner’s mindset also takes effort and is a daily task that requires repetition and practice.
The methods that I personally use include a commitment to
- Start the day right – my morning power hour includes 15 mins of positive meditation, 15 mins of learning and 30 minutes of exercise.
- I embrace uplifting conversations by strictly limiting media and social media time by switching to podcasts that contain useful and inspirational content
- I hang out with positive people who inspire me to be more and do more
- And personally I love setting stretch goals as a way to push myself to continually grow – these include fitness goals, learning goals and mastery of new talents.
There are always two choices in life – to focus on what is wrong, or to focus on what you can do to make things better. The hundreds and thousands of successful entrepreneurs around the world are choosing the latter, the winners attitude. So this week, let’s make a commitment to starting the day right and hanging out with the positive people that are making a difference!
