Do You Want To Be a Confident Leader?

“Confidence means trusting yourself enough to listen to others and to follow your inner judgement.”

Do you want to be a confident leader?

Confidence is essential if we are to succeed in our mission, yet most leaders experience times of low self-confidence. This prevents us from making wise decisions and leads to procrastination.

So, how can we reach this apparently magical state of confidence?

Firstly, let’s understand that even the most successful leaders suffer from lack of confidence at times. Typically, entrepreneurs are people who are different and feel like they don’t fit in. Unless we recognise that this difference makes us valuable, a lack of belonging will reinforce feelings of inadequacy.

Often, we create an image of the perfect leader that we cannot match, perhaps idealising flamboyant leaders like Steve Jobs, Vusi Thembekwayo or Oprah Winfrey. But we can only be ourselves, so the gap between this ideal and us is huge and can reinforce a feeling of not being enough.

Self-confidence needs nurturing and gentle daily care. These five steps can make all the difference:

1. Spend quiet time at the start of each day to find your calm centre

2. Remind yourself that “I am the only me in the world. I set the standards for being me”

3. Remind yourself too, that your thoughts, opinions and decisions are what make you different and valuable

4. Train yourself to trust your wisdom by reflecting on what worked and what didn’t. Write in your daily journal to reinforce your lessons and observe your progress

5. Lastly, surround yourself with people that admire you and lift you up! Choose leaders to admire and then recognise their skills within you: “if you spot it, you’ve got it!”

This week remember that you have succeeded in life because you have something special, different and valuable within you. Let’s nurture and celebrate our differences and make our voices heard!

Have a wonderful week.

With kind regards,

Catherine
