Embody the hero within
“Simple changes in the language we use can transform our energy from doing something to being someone.”
My audiobook lineup at the moment includes the best-selling book Atomic Habits by James Clear. The gems in the book are many, and yesterday one that stood out for me was his advice to embody the success you are seeking.
Let me explain how this mind tool works. For example, let’s say I am writing a book, or trying to write a book, I can say to myself “I am writing a book” or I can embody the energy of the success I’m working towards by saying “I am a writer”. If my goal is to write a really successful book and I’m struggling to maintain my momentum and wavering between sleeping in late or getting up to write I can keep myself on track by asking myself “What would the writer of a successful book do?”
Similarly, let’s say my goal is to get fit. I can respond to the question what are you doing by saying “I am trying to get fit” or I can transform this energy with the embodiment of success by answering “I am an athlete” and if I was struggling with the motivation to stick to my training programme I can keep myself on track with the question “What would an athlete do?”
Or if you are an entrepreneur like me, perhaps it’s a shift from “I’m an entrepreneur” to “I’m the CEO of a successful business” and if you are really ambitious but struggling to get out of bed on a Monday morning you might ask yourself the question “What would the leader of a global business do?” or go even further and use the name of your business hero “What would Bill Gates do?”
In this way a small change in internal language shifts us from doing something to the more powerful being someone and in that way inspires us with the right behaviours to get there.
As always, do let me know if you have further insights or thoughts to contribute.
