How to be a great leader
“All leaders have their bad days, but the best leaders recognise and make corrections”
The thing about bad habits is that they are much easier to spot in others than in ourselves! Let’s run through a list of some bad leadership skills around us as a way to reflect on our own.
Not listening: Oh, don’t we all hate this one! People who don’t listen to what you say and jump in with their own opinion or experience. Truth be told, we all suffer from this at times, especially in animated debate. The solution is to be aware of the tendency and to practise active listening. It’s a good habit to acknowledge what has been said before responding; when perhaps “I hear you” can work wonders!
Being a bully: Most of us have been bullied at some stage and have certainly bullied others. No one likes bullies, least of all you. Bullying in the workplace can happen when you repeatedly ask someone to do work that they are incapable (or feel incapable) of doing. Recognise the discomfort and change the direction of your request.
Avoiding decisions: Bad leaders are those who avoid making tough decisions. They waft along hoping that things will fix themselves, making it uncomfortable for the people around them. Understand that the higher up you go, the more tough decisions you have to make. Just do it.
Not leading by example: Bad leaders cultivate bad habits around them. Think of leaders whose corrupt, dishonest and misogynistic ways helped to sow bad behaviour in an entire generation of citizens. As a leader you reap what you sow, so be the best example of what you want around you!
I’m sure you have other examples that get you hot under the collar, and advice on how to fix it. If so, do share!
Have a fabulous week.
