Repetition reaps rewards
“It’s the small things repeated consistently that move us from where we are to where we want to be.”
I confess that secretly I am a bit of an Arnold Schwarzenegger fan. I love that he is completely outside the norm yet has battled and won in so many different areas in life. To be world class in body building, movies and politics is quite something for anyone, let alone a strange little boy from a tiny town in Austria.
So, it’s not that surprising that I couldn’t resist his book Be Useful. In it he admits there is nothing new in his life advice to readers – all pretty much the same stuff we all know, have a vision, practice, be grateful etc and the message is less about what you do, and more about the importance of repetition. Of doing it!
Intellectually we know that we should exercise, eat right, be kind, check our finances and all the other good things that will get us ahead in life. But it’s not the thinking that makes this happen. The repeated practice of what we preach is that moves us forward.
After all, it’s the repetition of sit-ups that strengthens our core and fixes our back ache.
The repetition of reading rather than vegetating in front of the TV that makes us wiser (and sleep better).
And repeat focus on being grateful for everything around us, that makes us measurably more content.
So, this week my mind is all about repetition. Choosing one habit each day and putting in the reps to make it stick.
It really is the small things, repeated consistently that move us from where we are to where we want to be. So today, I’m focusing on being grateful. What will you choose?
