“If your year has rushed by as if it was a week, is that because you have only been truly present for one week?”
This week I’d love to share some insights with you from a book that I’m enjoying with unexpected delight.
In Solve for Happy by Mo Gawdat (former chief business officer of Google), Mo talks about the importance of time. To my surprise, despite being an international business leader of one of the world’s largest and most influential companies, his message isn’t the usual one about efficiency and tips to do more with time, to do lists and multi-tasking.
Unexpectedly, his message is about making the most of our time on earth – by being present. This means stepping away from life as a mindless blur of busyness, frantic deadlines and “where did the week go?” and choosing to slow down the mind to savour the moments we have.
He poses the question – if the past month flew by in a flash, and a month felt like a week, is it because we were only really present for that one week? What did we do for the other three weeks? What about the past year? Are we living life, or is it simply passing in a mindless blur? Are we actually asleep on the job or are we awake and appreciating life?
This made me wonder, do we age at the rate of the busyness of our minds? And if so, by how much can we slow life down and increase it’s richness simply by being present? How much more can we raise our enjoyment by making the most of every life experience, including the school run, the shopping, and even the dentist! When for example did you really stop to enjoy the pleasure of a meal. The taste, the smell, the sight and the texture of it as you ate each mouthful?
So, this week is a reminder to pause and really enjoy that coffee, the taste, the texture and the love with which the barista made the heart on the top of it!
