Unlock your female advantage
“In a world that thrives on successful businesses, supporting female founders is a driver for growth and innovation.”
In our 2025 SAB Foundation Tholoana Enterprise Programme awards, women won all the performance awards. I find this remarkable, given that the programme has equal numbers of women and men, and awards are based solely on performance with no ‘extra points’ for being women.
Fetola’s long term data also shows that the performance of female founders has been increasing as they become more resilient, diligent and resourceful (keep an eye out for our Women in business report due out in Q2).
Many entrepreneurs also reach out to mentor others around them, living the ‘pay it forward’ ethos, by supporting younger founders and business leaders. So, in a world where we need more successful, healthy businesses, how can we support female founders to succeed?
As I listen in to conversations from women that come from traditional backgrounds, or homes and communities that are male-dominated, the more I realise the importance of female-founders-only solution-spaces.
These dedicated support circles for female founders can be immensely beneficial. They provide a safe space for sharing experiences, exchanging advice, and fostering a sense of community. They can help female entrepreneurs overcome unique challenges, such as gender bias and balancing work-life demands. Support circles also offer networking, and collaboration, which are crucial for building confidence and achieving business success.
To help us think about how to help ourselves and those around us, I’ve picked out three pros and cons to consider.
The Cons:
- Group Think: Female-only support circles are at risk from groupthink. This is if closed-minded thinking fosters a belief that all problems are exclusive to women, when in reality challenges may be generalised for all founders and business leaders.
- Victim mindset: Groups need to encourage a culture of empowerment and the mindset to overcome challenges and avoid cultivating a climate of victimhood.
- Stagnation: Over-reliance on the circle for decision-making and support might impede the development of individual problem-solving skills and independence. The goal is to empower self-belief and self-confidence
The Pros:
- Emotional Support: Female founders can share their struggles and triumphs in a non-judgmental environment, helping to alleviate feelings of isolation and stress.
- Mentorship: Access to experienced female mentors who understand the specific challenges women face and can offer guidance, provide insights, and help navigate the entrepreneurial landscape can significantly boost confidence and skill development.
- Networking: A network of like-minded individuals can open doors to new opportunities, partnerships, and resources that might not be accessible otherwise.
As a female founder I am personally driven by a desire to be the best and give the best regardless of my gender. And it seems from the results tables that I am not alone! This week let’s acknowledge the power of women and find ways to help others achieve even greater success.
