Why We Ignore The Obvious

“Wilful blindness is the subconscious decision to not see something that is happening around you.”

Oops, I nearly forgot to write you a greeting! I usually write this late on Sunday or first thing Monday morning but perhaps the reason for that forgetfulness is that I am reading the book Wilful Blindness: Why we ignore the Obvious by Margaret Heffernan. In it Heffernan that explains why we forget our dentist appointment, fall in love with the wrong people or subconsciously turn a blind eye to what is happening around us. Wilful Blindness is a survival mechanism.

As a South African sometimes we need to turn a blind eye to things around us so that we don’t get swallowed by a cycle of negativity (a good thing) but need to be aware when it relates to important decisions for our success and safety (when blindness would be a bad thing).

It’s a book worth reading if you want to understand your own blind spots or those of the people around you. It is also a good reminder to have checks and balances for yourself and your business to be sure you are staying awake to the important things.

Wishing you a great week ahead.
