Two steps to manage your stress

Are you feeling stressed?

I have noticed over the past couple of weeks how my stress levels have been rising – fitful sleep, some minor health niggles, painful jaw from clenching my teeth at night and a tendency to skip the basic self-care routine such as daily exercise.

The dual challenges of keeping healthy and keeping the business thriving while working from home are starting to build up. It is beginning to feel like the relentless drone of traffic during rush hour.

These days it’s also tricky to destress as the usual coffee date, or a meal out with friends is off the cards and here in Cape Town the winter weather is starting to press in with rain and storms, so outdoor exercise feels less appealing.

So, what can I do?
Firstly, I know from experience that the breakthrough is recognising that I am suffering from the effects of stress. Secondly, I need a strategy to break the cycle.

I worked on a big proposal this weekend. So, I have decided to take a day off in the week to go paragliding. The complete break from work – outdoors in the open, with friends (with masks on!) and the total concentration on the art of flying will be good for me.

The rest of the days this week will become focused and productive as the timeline is shorter – forcing me to concentrate on high-value activities and not on the daily ‘busyness’ such as emails and low-value meetings. I will also be more conscious of looking after myself a bit better by taking a break between meetings and clocking time for a proper tea and lunch break.

I wish you a calm week. If you, too, have the feeling of crumbling under a blanket of stress just know you are not alone. You can make a commitment to reduce your stress by putting your own needs first at least one day this week. Have a great week!

Kind regards,

Catherine
