Let’s Row That Boat!

“Success is sparked by strategy and driven by tactics.”

Let’s row that boat!

A friend of mine, Zirk Botha, is rowing across the Atlantic Ocean from Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.  He is already past the halfway mark of this 7000km challenge and well on his way to setting a world record for crossing that sea, alone and unassisted.

His story highlights the importance of strategy, operations, and tactics in achieving success.

Strategy was the inspiring process of deciding which of the array of life challenges to conquer and why, then matching the challenge to his personal life purpose. Operations was the process of building the boat, getting the sponsorship, and packing the provisions.

Now, it’s all down to tactics. The daily doing of what needs to be done to get him from Cape Town to Rio. Rowing. By hand. For days and weeks on end. Much like business!

In a start-up, we are focused on strategy – the delightful fun of dreaming and planning. But as the business grows, work on strategy is more fleeting and we spend most of our time and energy on the daily grind of rowing – doing what needs to be done. Yet without rowing, Zirk would be just another man talking about his dreams. In the end, for Zirk and ourselves, success is all about doing daily tactics.

Wishing you a powerful week of rowing across your ocean. Just get it done!

With kind regards,

Catherine
