From big dreams to job done

It’s not enough to have a good idea, it’s the implementation that matters most.”

If you have been in my network for a while you will be familiar with my maxim “It’s not enough to have a good idea, it’s the implementation that matters most”

So, with that in mind, the start of February brings us all to attention as we switch from January’s big ideas to February’s action stations.

If you, like me could do with help to get those big dreams done, these five tips will help.

  1. Focus on your dream so that it’s crystal clear in your mind. Know what you want to achieve and why. If it’s a book you are writing – see it in printed form in your mind and imagine what you will do and how you will feel on launch day!
  2. Set aside the first hour of your day for strategic (non-operational) tasks. This prioritises your game-changing actions and prevents you getting bogged down by the busyness of your day. For example, if you plan to write a book set yourself a goal to write for one hour every morning until the manuscript is done.
  3. Set yourself a hard stop at the end of your project or plan. This ensures efficient use of your available time and means that you resist the temptation to shift the goalposts. (Think of how much you get done in the last week before a holiday to see examples of how this works!) To follow the book theme, set yourself a publication date and link your launch date with an event that cannot be moved.
  4. Set yourself realistic steps towards success. Small consistent steps will get you further than radical swings of inconsistent effort. Whilst a 30,000-word manuscript is a daunting prospect, broken into 500- or 1000-word pieces every day it’s a goal that can be achieved in 30 to 60 days.
  5. Lastly, share your intentions with others so that they can support you, and keep you accountable when you are tempted to slack off. This person will help to motivate you when you falter and keep you true to your intentions.

So, this week, whether you are writing a book, launching a new product, renovating your house or starting a new business, it’s time to jump into action mode. Turn on your ability to get it done and make implementation your power- for success.

Wishing you a week of productivity and getting things done.
