Easing the money pressure

Catherine is off visiting her family this week, and I’ve been given the opportunity to share some thoughts as a young professional on the topic of money. And to ponder ways to manage them! Every year, especially around this time, I start to feel the weight of money. Not just the numbers in my account but the expectations attached to them.

There’s the unspoken pressure to seem like we have it all together. The desire to show up at the dinners, birthdays, and weddings because you don’t want to disappoint anyone. There’s also that quiet fear of missing out, because what if I sit this one out and everyone else is making memories without me?

Not to mention that underneath it all, there’s the bigger stuff. The thoughts about the future that sit in the back of my mind, running a sustainable business, owning a home, being able to travel, or just feeling financially safe one day. It’s a lot to hold!

I’ve realised that the festive season often magnifies all these feelings. It’s meant to be a time of rest and joy, but it can quickly become a test of endurance, emotionally and financially. So, this year, I want to approach it differently. Not by pretending the anxiety isn’t there, but by doing small things that make the season feel lighter.

Here are a few lessons I’m taking into this season:

1. It’s okay not to have it all together.

We don’t have to perform stability. The people who matter most usually care more about your presence than your appearance.

2. You can say no with love.

Missing a few events doesn’t make you less supportive or fun. Sometimes saying no is how you protect your peace and your budget.

3. Enjoyment doesn’t have to be expensive.

Good company, laughter, and rest are free. Sometimes the best memories come from low-pressure moments, not the “big” plans.

4. Plan for calm, not perfection.

There will always be another expense, another goal, another month. I’m learning to let go of the idea that I have to “catch up” to everyone else and focus instead on feeling grounded right where I am.

Maybe that’s what this season is really about, learning to rest in what we have, rather than chasing what we think we’re missing.
