Inspiring leadership

Last week I had the pleasure of working with a group of 60 inspiring entrepreneurs who are about to start their new growth journey on the SAB Foundation Tholoana accelerator. This personal transformation and vision-setting workshop is an inspiring reminder of the role that self-knowledge plays in the quest for good leadership.

Leaders appear in all walks of life – in families, at schools, in communities, political parties and of course in business. Each leader has the unique opportunity to make their own positive impact in the world. It’s our leadership skills that are the fuel to turn this vision into reality.

Leadership has many facets and is the ability to:

  • Clarify and communicate a clear and inspiring vision to others.
  • Build a culture of passion, innovation, and excellence in the organization.
  • Motivate and empower people to perform at their best.
  • Establish trust and credibility and build long-term relationships.
  • Encourage others to make ethical and strategic decisions that align with our values and goals.

Luckily for us, leadership is not a fixed trait that we are born with or without. It is a skill that improves through experience and a deliberate intention. In my lifetime of developing my own and others’ leadership skills, I have found these four points to be beneficial:

  1. Cultivate your mindset. Seek to find the positive in both success and failure. To mine every opportunity for what you can learn.
  2. Stretch yourself. Take on challenges that build your abilities and take you beyond your comfort zone. Learn about yourself as you reach out into the unknown.
  3. Observe closely what is going on around you. Feel for responses and emotions in the people that you engage with and ask for insights and constructive feedback from those around you. Reflect on your actions and outcomes and identify opportunities to improve.
  4. Keep learning and growing. Enhance your knowledge and skills with books, articles, podcasts, or blogs such as this Simon Sinek podcast. Learn from others who bring different perspectives and experiences.

So, this week let’s acknowledge the importance of leadership as both a responsibility and a privilege. Let’s seek ways to learn and grow our leadership muscles so that we can all be a force for good and make a difference in the world!

Wishing you an amazing week.
