I’m so excited to see that the word “Authentic” has been named the 2023 word of the year by Merriam’s Dictionary. This word really resonates with me as authentic leadership means allowing the true essence of who we are to shine. When we calm our anxieties and step away from our fears that hold us back, it’s our authentic self that lies at the core of who we truly are.

I’d like to believe that the number of people searching for the meaning of the word ‘authentic’ is an indication of how many good leaders are searching for authenticity in their own lives. In my experience, the most fulfilling, contented, and creative times are when we are true to ourselves. How often do we tell people to “just be you” and “let your light shine”? The reason is that we recognise something different shines out when we have the creative freedom to live a life unafraid and believe in what we do and say.

In the same vein, we are often drawn to authentic products and reject false promises and fake offers. Authenticity in business is more than a buzzword; it’s a commitment to transparency and sincerity. Many customers seek deeper connections with what they buy. Just as a genuine hand-crafted leather bag carries its unique story, authentic businesses resonate with those customers who appreciate truth and integrity. Building lasting, warm, and genuine relationships with those around us begins with embracing our essence, our genuine self — that is the cornerstone of authentic friendships and the heart of a thriving business.

So let’s take our cue from the word of the year and rock the world with our authenticity!
