What does good look like?

“Let go of the fear of failure and step into limitless possibility.

This came up again recently at the Motse Collective gathering at Constitution Hill, Johannesburg — a fabulous event where more than a hundred passionate people came together, driven by a shared goal to make South Africa a better place for all.

The room was bursting with ideas. So many ways to solve the problem. So much energy. And as I listened to the buzz of options, I couldn’t resist asking my favourite question:

“What does good look like?”

Over the years, I’ve found these five words can completely change the direction of a conversation. Perhaps it’s because I’m quite impulsive myself, and love to jump right into action mode! The question forces us to focus and be clear on the destination or goal before we start rushing down the path to solving it. This helps us align, avoid unfortunate assumptions, and build clarity around the table.

It’s a question that works in all areas of life:

The holiday

Two people say they want a “real holiday.” One imagines quiet beaches. The other, bustling city streets. Without asking the question, they’re on two completely different trips.

The team
A group wants to “build a better product.” Half think the focus is on user experience, the other half on profit margins. If no one defines what “good” actually means, the project turns into a frustrating tangle of confusion, wasted time and effort.

The ‘high five’
A manager says, “Great job!” The employee thinks she has noticed the perfect formatting of their report, but the manager’s just thrilled it was delivered on time. If expectations aren’t shared, next time may see a perfect report, delivered too late!

Whether it’s work, leadership, family or big-picture goals, asking “What does good look like?” is one of the easiest ways to get closer to goal.

Next time you’re looking ahead, whether alone or with others, try asking it. It might surprise you how powerful it is.

And I’m curious…

Do you have a favourite “power question” that helps bring focus or alignment? I’d love to hear it.

Have a wonderful week!
